- New photos show an iPhone 17 Air dummy unit alongside the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge
- Apple’s phone looks quite a lot slimmer than Samsung’s
- However, its camera appears to stick out further
With the recent release of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which is 5.8 mm thick, and the impending release of the iPhone 17 Air, which may be even thinner, it appears that this year will be a battle of the ultra-thin smartphones.
The precise thickness of Apple’s next phone has not yet been decided by tipsters; different reports place it between 5.0mm and 6.0mm. However, the majority of recent leaks place it in the center of those numbers; different sources have proposed 5.44mm, 5.5mm, and 5.65mm.
The iPhone 17 Air will be thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge if it weighs in at any of the rumored thicknesses. Although a 0.15–0.35 mm difference may not seem like much, a leaked image indicates that the two phones’ thickness differences could be quite apparent.

The images above, which were shared by @theonecid, show a Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge next to what appears to be an iPhone 17 Air dummy device. As you can see, the latter appears to be significantly thinner.
However, the iPhone 17 Air may not be significantly thinner at its widest point because it appears like the camera lens protrudes a little more than Samsung’s. Nevertheless, the iPhone 17 Air appears remarkably slim in this image.
Coming with compromises
Naturally, having a phone this thin comes with concessions. The most significant one is reportedly that there is only one camera lens on the back. The normal iPhone 17 is anticipated to contain two, just like the Galaxy S25 Edge.
Furthermore, if you decide to go with Apple’s slimmest phone, you may have to make a lot of sacrifices because the iPhone 17 Air is probably going to have a small battery.
However, there are good solutions. There are a number of other smartphones to pick from, including the remainder of the iPhone 17 lineup, which we anticipate launching in early September, and the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, if you’re looking for something a tad thicker.
