- Google’s Gemini AI assistant will start remembering your past chats
- You can opt out of the feature
- Gemini is also adding a new “Temporary Chat” mode for one-off conversations
Unless you specifically ask it not to, Google Gemini will now remember every question you ask on the app. Though now limited to Gemini 2.5 Pro, the AI assistant will review and refer to your previous conversations in order to tailor future ones.
Theoretically, Gemini’s memory function could remember your favorite party themes, your favorite YouTube channels, or your preferred email format for friends without you having to remind it. Gemini’s memory is comparable to ChatGPT’s and other AI chatbots’ memory features. Additionally, Gemini offers native access to Gmail, Calendar, and Google Docs, even if ChatGPT may now connect to your Google account.
If you would rather that Gemini not keep track of your conversations, you will need to do a little effort because the memory is turned on by default. By sliding the “Your past chats” option to off in the settings menu under personal context, you can switch the memory on or off again.
Additionally, “Keep Activity” is the new name for the “Gemini Apps Activity” section. Some of your future submitted files and images might be used to train and enhance Gemini and other Google services if that option is enabled. If you’d like, you can also choose not to do that.
Temp talks

Google combined the release with its opposite, the new Temporary Chat, despite its eagerness to ensure Gemini can remember what you say to it. This incognito mode ensures that each communication is unique and isn’t recorded in your history, shown in your activity list, or submitted to Google for Gemini training.
They are erased after a 72-hour hold for security, unless you provide specific input, which is processed before being eliminated. For those times when you want to ask a question you’re not sure you’ll want remembered, Temporary Chat is made for you.
Although Google obviously expects that users will find value in giving Gemini a memory, the brief interactions may calm those who are concerned that the firm is only requesting more of their data. As opposed to merely a tool you reintroduce yourself to each time you engage with it, Google wants consumers to consider the AI as a conversation companion for the long term.
Regardless of any worries, memory is a top priority for AI engineers since without it, AI assistants are only intelligent parrots. Even with personalization, they are still technically merely repeating facts, but they will be less astute about it. Your desire for closeness with software will determine whether you find that intriguing or frightening.
