  • Ryan Reynolds has hinted that he’ll appear in one or both of the next two Avengers movies
  • The Deadpool star sent fans into a frenzy with a cryptic Instagram post
  • The image and caption features call-backs to two of the most profitable Marvel films

Another day, another cast rumor for Avengers: Doomsday, but this time it involves a Marvel actor that has fans going crazy over a potential role.

Fans reacted furiously to Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds’ post on Instagram overnight, speculating about his possible role in the superhero movie.

Normally, this kind of message wouldn’t be worth mentioning. One may argue that the artwork is merely a reference to Deadpool and Wolverine, with a red, rebellious version of the Avengers logo superimposed over the official badge of the superteam. The sole Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film that debuted in theaters last year made over $1 billion worldwide.

However, what has MCU fans thrilled is the caption that goes with that image. Reynolds wrote, quoting Clint Barton/Hawkeye’s crucial dialogue from 2019’s Avengers: Endgame: “Avoid doing it. Don’t offer me any hope.

Naturally, Reynolds is implying that The Merc With a Mouth might finally fulfill his dream of joining Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to fight an alien danger. This is what Deadpool says during his interview to join the super-group in Deadpool and Wolverine’s opening act.

Reynolds was not included in the original cast of Doomsday, which consisted of 27 people and was revealed in a four-hour livestream in March. However, Marvel stated less than twenty-four hours later that “there’s always room for more,” suggesting that more cast members could be added in the upcoming months. Here is a list of 17 other Marvel heroes I hope to see in Avengers: Doomsday, if that interests you.

I’m getting off topic, though. I doubt Deadpool will make an appearance in Avengers 5, but Reynolds’ most recent social media tweet suggests he will in a future Avengers film. Instead, I believe he would be more useful if he played a significant role in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Listen to me first. The film concludes with the titular duo living on Earth-10005, as I described in my post explaining the Deadpool and Wolverine conclusion. The majority of the MCU Phase 5 movie takes place in that parallel reality, one of several that coexist with Earth-616, also known as the MCU.

The two Marvel ‘Secret Wars’ comic book series are also “drawing inspiration” for Doomsday and its sequel, according to Joe and Anthony Russo, who returned to the MCU to direct both. I won’t give away the plots of either book here; instead, you can read the linked article mentioned above and my explanation of the Fantastic Four: First Steps finale to find out more about how they might have influenced Doomsday and its sequel. The latter essay is especially worth reading since it shows how the plot of Doomsday may be built up in the first Marvel Phase 6 film.

Regardless, it makes more sense for Deadpool to encounter The Avengers in Secret Wars rather than being forced into its antecedent given what is likely to occur in Doomsday (really, read the two articles linked above). With so many people, Doomsday is already going to be a hectic movie. As I mentioned above, there may be more heroes involved, thus Marvel would be better off postponing Deadpool’s alliance with the Avengers until Secret Wars to make sure the character’s and fans’ emotional rewards are worth the wait.

However, what are your thoughts? Is Reynolds virtually certain that Deadpool will make an appearance in one or both of the Avengers films? In which one do you want to see him?
